Cerith Wyn Evans and Gregor Muir
Whenever I hear the word Cerith I reach for my Schopenhauer.
In recent years, Cerith Wyn Evans has produced artworks such as text-based firework displays, complex sound sculptures, columns of lights with heat generating filaments and Morse code activated chandeliers. To my mind what seems to connect these works is their resistance to those artforms dictated to by natural light; each artwork seemingly preoccupied with its own artifice and haptic by-product.
Wyn Evans has also developed an art of association whereby we are returned to, say, the work of Marcel Broodthaers, or, via his longstanding appreciation of expanded cinema, experimental filmmakers such as Lis Rhodes. ‘Inverse, Reverse, Perverse’, the title given to a 1996 solo-exhibition, might equally be read as a maxim, directing us toward an appreciation of Wyn Evans’ exquisitely twisted hypothesis.
Having been invited by Cubitt to participate in the production of a ‘print box’, Wyn Evans has used this opportunity to appropriate photographic imagery of naked men bathed in a mysterious black light reminiscent of an electronic phosphor burn, like those found on old TV sets or ATM monitors.
