‘Meet the Artists’ is a monthly sharing inviting the artists based in the St. Luke’s Centre studios to show their work and present opportunities to members of the centre. The artists work on their own practice in the studios – which ranges from architecture, to painting, illustration, video and textile design – as well as running workshops and skills-based sessions for members of the centre.
We wanted to give the members of the centre a glimpse into the artists’ work by bringing the work to them, as well as finding out what they can get involved in over a nice cup of tea! As some members have poor eyesight or mobility issues the artists were invited to bring works which they could literally give to the members to hold, touch, feel and look at, which encouraged people who initially said they ‘can’t’ to interact with the works on a different level.
The first ‘Meet the Artists’ was a great afternoon, where members really enjoyed meeting the artists and looking at their work. One woman commented that it was lovely to see such inspired and motivated people, one man spoke to Azar Djamili, the architect in the studios and are planning on setting up a model making club, and another woman suggested she become John’s life drawing model!
