First collective workshop for the new Cubitt Young Artists programme 2013. The group of young people, selected from across Islington’s secondary schools worked with artists John Close and Barbara Beyer to develop different drawing techniques.
John focused on portraiture, asking participants to draw themselves through the use of touch not sight and then comparing their images to their mirror reflections. The idea of portraiture was then expanded by encouraging participants to create images filled with their preferences and hobbies rather than their physical appearance.
Barbara’s workshop focused on expressive drawing skills and the participants were encouraged to respond in quick sketches to different words and then repeated this process collaboratively on a large piece of paper against a wall.
The workshop took place at Central St Martins Back Hill site which will be the location for future monthly workshops in the Cubitt Young Artists Programme. See the CYA website here: http://cubittyoungartists.wordpress.com/
