Cubitt Education worked with Islington Council on an historic event to mark the 2012 Olympics. Pupils from 26 schools across the borough made their own unique torches, and then carried them in a relay that led from one school to the next across the whole of Islington, finishing at Islington Town Hall.
Cubitt provided artist-led workshops in the schools: supporting pupils and staff to create imaginative and visually stunning torches based on their own ideas, inspiration and school values. Techniques and materials used to make the torches ranged from print making to weaving and from drawing to textiles, ribbon and collage.
In addition to their own school torches pupils also carried the Olympic torches from the 1948 and 1956 Olympic Games. The complete relay lasted nearly 17 miles and for pupils from St Luke’s Primary School the journey even included a stretch over water, assisted by Islington Boat Club.
